Product Introduction


Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM), also known as spark machining or electro-erosion machining, is a non-traditional manufacturing process that utilizes controlled electrical sparks to remove material from conductive workpieces. The fundamental principle involves maintaining a minute gap between a tool electrode (typically made of copper, graphite, or other conductive materials) and a workpiece electrode submerged in a dielectric fluid (such as kerosene or deionized water). Under pulsed power supply, periodic spark discharges generate localized instantaneous temperatures reaching 8,000–12,000°C, causing material to melt or vaporize, thereby achieving precise material removal.

A defining characteristic of EDM is its non-contact nature, allowing it to machine any electrically conductive material regardless of hardness—making it especially effective for processing high-strength, high-toughness materials. It excels at producing complex geometries, intricate micro-features, and deep narrow cavities that are challenging for conventional cutting methods. Based on electrode form and motion, EDM is primarily classified into two types:

  • Die-Sinking EDM: Uses a pre-shaped three-dimensional electrode to replicate its form onto the workpiece, commonly applied in mold cavities, turbine blades, and complex sculpted surfaces.
  • Wire-Cut EDM: Employs a continuously moving thin wire (usually molybdenum or brass) as the tool electrode, guided by CNC systems to cut intricate two-dimensional profiles. It is particularly suitable for precision stamping dies, templates, and through-hole shapes.
Critical process parameters include pulse duration, pulse interval, peak current, discharge voltage, and electrode retraction control. Modern EDM systems often incorporate adaptive control, intelligent discharge detection, and multi-axis CNC technology, significantly enhancing processing stability, accuracy, and automation. Machined surfaces typically exhibit a characteristic micro-crater texture, with specific surface roughness (down to Ra 0.1 μm) achievable through fine parameter adjustment. However, EDM also presents limitations such as relatively slow material removal rates, electrode wear, restriction to conductive materials, and dielectric fluid management requirements.
Driven by technological advancements, EDM is evolving toward higher efficiency, greater precision, larger aspect-ratio machining, and increased intelligence. It is increasingly integrated with additive manufacturing and laser processing to form hybrid manufacturing solutions. Today, EDM has become an indispensable key technology in fields such as aerospace precision components, medical devices, precision molds, automotive engine core parts, and microelectronic device manufacturing.
